Alexandra Park

Alexandra Park is a small triangle of green space on Beach Avenue, opposite English Bay Beach at the foot of Denman Street. Its wooden benches and shady trees make it a pleasant place to sit on a sunny day.

A recently renovated marble drinking fountain commemorates Joe Fortes, a popular local character who lived on the beach from the 1890’s, taught local children to swim, and was the first official lifeguard at English Bay. When the city cleared the beach of illegal shacks his home was threatened but, after a public outcry, he was allowed to relocate across the road in Alexandra Park. He died in 1922.

There is a bandstand in the park and there are free Sunday concerts starting at 2pm from mid-June to mid-July.
