Experience Vancouver Whale Watching in Style and Comfort!
For anyone visiting British Columbia’s west coast, whale watching is a must do activity. VancouverTourist.com recently visited with Vancouver Whale Watch to find out more about this once in a life time adventure. We were impressed with the friendly staff from the moment we arrived at their cheerful and spacious offices.
Whale watching tours depart daily from Steveston Harbour, a quaint and historical fishing village located 35 minutes from downtown Vancouver. 3 to 5 hour long tours operate from April to October.
All tours are accompanied by a professional Naturalist to answer guests’ questions and enhance the guests’ experience with interpretive commentary. Passengers can listen to the whales’ communications as all vessels are equipped with hydrophones especially designed for listening to the underwater sounds emitted by whales.
In addition to seeing the magnificent Orcas or Killer Whales guests experience a variety of marine wildlife, including Dall’s porpoises, seals, sea lions and bald eagles. The island scenery is spectacular; most tours travel through British Columbia’s Gulf Islands and San Juan Islands.
Vancouver Whale Watch is British Columbia’s only whale watching company to operate zodiac style vessels. The zodiac design allows the boat to travel at top speeds over the water providing passengers with a smooth, stable ride for maximum comfort while significantly reducing the chances of seasickness.
With three vessels to choose from there is sure to be a boat to suit everyone’s sense of adventure. All boats are equipped with onboard washrooms. The Lightship is a 12 passenger open zodiac, referred to as the Convertible. In comparison the Express, a semi covered boat suitable for families with younger children is called the Cadillac.
The boat that has everyone excited is the Explorathor. This boat built, specifically for marine mammal viewing launched in the spring of 2010. As a 47 passenger vessel with open seating in the front, covered area in the back and an upper level observation deck to provide passengers with a superior viewing opportunity of the whales it is a cross between the two. Its Volvo engines emit the lowest emissions possible and provide a safe environment for the whales’ honouring the company’s commitment to preserving the marine habitat of the Orcas.
Operating since 1998 Vancouver Whale Watch is the most experienced whale watching company in the lower mainland. Their whale sighting success rate is higher than 95% in peak season. While they rarely have a “no whale day” their sight unseen guarantee means that no one leaves disappointed. If you go with them and do not see a whale they will take you out again for free. Your return guarantee pass has no expiry date and is good for life.
For those guests without a vehicle, a shuttle service is offered at an additional cost. The Orca Express picks up in nine convenient locations in downtown Vancouver; for those with their own cars or RVs free all day parking is available.
Vancouver Whale Watch places high importance on your comfort and safety. They will provide you with all the gear you need, dress in layers, it is always cooler on the water; bring sunglasses, sunscreen and a lunch. And most important bring your camera!
Reservations for the tour are recommended, you can call the office directly at 604-274-9565 or book on-line at www.vancouverwhalewatch.com
